War without espionage is a war that cannot be won. Espionage is the gathering of intelligence, whether political, economical, military, or environmental, in order to gain the upper hand and possibly win a conflict of war. When one thinks of espionage, one thinks of spies like James Bond or Mata Hari; or corporate espionage, where someone tries to steal the formula for a specific product. There are many "spy agencies" the world over and today's spies are technologically savvy--and some, not even human.
- The Espionage Act of 1917: Clandestine activity that passes secret political or military information to other countries is punishable by a large fine--or death, depending on the severity of the act. This act was amended in 1918 to make it a crime punishable by a large fine or prison time for any act of helping the enemy.
