Network Security Cameras

Network cameras are security cameras that connect to an existing computer network. A network is simply a group of two or more computers linked together and each camera hooked up to the network actually has a unique IP address. An IP address is a unique identifier, like a person’s social security number.

Network security cameras are able to be viewed remotely over the internet using a graphics capable web browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. The IP address is typed in to the browser and, if protection is set up, a password is typed in when prompted. The security cameras can then be viewed. No computer is required on location, since the security cameras themselves are self contained web servers. The frame rate of motion viewed over the internet depends upon the speed of the internet connection, as well as other factors. A high speed internet connection is recommended. The standard for network security cameras is 30 frames per second of live motion video at up to 640 x 480 resolution, with the ability to view multiple cameras on a single screen. Network security cameras can even be viewed on a handheld PC or a cell phone, so long as the devices are internet ready.

Network security cameras are available in several different variants, including vandal resistant, PTZ, and day/night. Day/night capability, also called night vision, means the cameras are color by day and black and white in full darkness. If a network security camera has pan, tilt, and zoom capability, these features can often be controlled remotely. Wireless network security cameras are another variant, which allows the camera to operate without the use of network cables. Encryption for security cameras is available to prevent others from accessing your network illegally.
