The federal government was established by the U.S. Constitution in 1790 and manages the United States of America. The powers of the federal government are vast, and because we have 50 states, managing them all is a huge task. Therefore, in addition to the three branches of government (legislative, judicial and executive), the federal government is broken down into agencies that control different parts of our lives.
Government agencies are organizations, each of which is responsible for administering certain functions of the federal government. Each agency has different functions within the governmental system. For example, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms controls alcohol, cigarettes and guns; while the Center for Mental Health Service controls laws and programs that concern mental health. Governmental agencies usually contain kids’ pages, which are dedicated to helping a child understand what each agency does and the role it plays in our federal government. Some kids’ pages feature fun games and activities to help children learn about the functions of that agency. Look to the following resources to find various government agency pages for kids.
